03:31 pm - Speaking Freely

Wow.  Well, I had been debating a post about my feelings about the completely unexpected friending of this journal by several people I greatly respect.  Something along the lines of how I feel the need to be entertaining.  Instead, here I am spitting mad.  I'm reading through the events of the LJ strikeout  and I need to add my small shout of outrage to the ether.
I understand the instigators have the best of intentions.  They want to fight injustice and act as rescuers of the weak.  However, such accusations need to be made with due deliberation and a careful search for evidence.  This group acted in haste and prejudice.  Having a moral code does not make anyone infallible.  Nor does it justify all actions.  I can think of many times when  having the best intentions still made for the worst outcome.  The most intriguing stories IMO are those where ALL the characters believe they are doing good.  There are few true villains in the world but we all have the capacity to act villainous and I believe WFI's actions fit the bill.  I've seen accusations that their goals are broader and more weakly defined.  It they are religious extremists, then I personally believe their actions are terrorism.  They are using threats and fear to push their agenda.
I'm a survivor of both child abuse and rape.  I did need help and protection but censorship wouldn't have helped me or my sister.  My own silence prevented authorities from discovering the situation in our childhood home; my date rapist in college.  It sheltered our abusers, not us.  Talking about abuse does not engender abuse, does not encourage it.  Silence does.

Well, I've finally caved and gotten an account.  I expect I shall be deadly boring with exceedingly few posts.  However, I can now sign up to read all those locked communities and journals I've been lusting after.  Yay!  Now I need to experiment with cut tags and the like.  Off to read up on it.
